Brilliant
Surprisingly large and with brightly illustrated with screen captures to break up what mightâve been slightly slower-paced anecdotes, this anthology work is stellar. A must-have for every gamerâs shelves to add depth and history to their hobby. The author does a great job telling stories behind the games in a fascinating way.
Fantastic Book!
As a lifelong gamer and collector in his mid-40’s, this is a really fabulous addition to my gaming book collection. The writing is crisp, the topics are dear to my heart, the layouts are fantastic, and kudos to the publisher for using such premium materials. The author weaves a set of tales that add nuance and lots of new information to all of the eras of video gaming I’ve grown up with. The result is a compelling defense of and condemnation of some of the industry’s biggest missteps. Strangely enough, I already thought that some of these games that history remembers as “bad” were actually pretty good. For example, I spent a lot of time as a kid playing “Pac-Man” for the Atari 2600. The author tells us why it ended up being so different from the arcade version and why it left a bad taste in so many players’ mouths. It’s such an interesting story that I think any fan of Pac-Man should read. This book is a gem. It is very much recommended for anyone interested in gaming history or why some of their favorite games were considered flops.
Such a great read!!
Very entertaining and took me back to childhood in the best way! Now a coffee table book in our gaming room and we get SO many requests to borrow or flip through it!!!
Great Takes
This book is giving nostalgia; what a fun ride with some great insight and takeaways for game producers and players of all kinds!
Funny and witty
Funny and witty book that I can see both gamers and non-gamers enjoying. I have not played the games described, and yet I found each chapter to be engaging and enjoyable, with sufficient context given for a non-player to get a fun sense of each game. At the same time, gamers will appreciate the interwoven historical knowledge, nuance, and sense that the author knows his stuff. The chapter on E.T. had me laughing out loud!
A great compilation that pulls out some real surprises
As a huge fan of the Angry Video Game Nerd, I’ve come to truly appreciate “bad” video games. In that spirit, this book explores some of the obvious and many of the not-so-obvious video game duds from over 40 years of industry history. It’s a fun read with decent perspective and a colorful layout. The book itself is excellent quality, and looks fantastic in my collection. I’d love to see a second volume, if the author would be so inclined. Just a very fun book overall.
