1. Premiere Pro Plus
   There are several good non-linear editors for movies and videos in the market place, and I’m not prepared to say which is the best. I happen to have settled on Adobe Premiere Pro, but even in this software, with plenty of capabilities, I occasionally encounter a problem I can’t solve with Premiere. Recently, I was trying to stabilize a photograph of a bird clutching a branch in a windstorm but almost everything was waving around so much that Premiere couldn’t stabilize the image. However there was a tree trunk that was not bending in the wind. I shifted the clip to After Effects, and was able to stabilize the movie. Sometimes, I want to animate graphics in a video beyond the capabilities of Premiere, and After Effects has thus far satisfied my desires.After Effects is part of the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, so if you already have the suite you have After Effects. Unfortunately, there is little that’s come intuitively in the software, so you will need help finding your way through the complicated interface. Although I’ve reviewed several books on After Effects, this is the one I prefer. You can download practice files from the publisher’s web site and then follow tutorials to learn to use the software. (I sometimes hear folks complain about the difficulty of downloading the practice files. Read and parse the instructions in the book carefully and there shouldn’t be a problem.)What makes this book even better is the companion website, access to which comes with the price of the paper copy. The web version mirrors the printed text, but also includes short quizzes and videos that demonstrate the same text. After Effects has a crowded interface, so seeing a video makes it easier to see what button is being pressed. For me the best part of the web version is that I don’t have to juggle a book while working on my computer, but just switch back and forth between on-online text and After EffectsThere is one annoying aspect of using the videos. My aged eyes made me maximize the videos to full screen. When I minimized the first video I was returned to the top of the page. However, when there were more videos lower on the page, and I had maximized one of these, I was returned to the top of the page when I minimized the later video. I had to scroll down to return to the point from which I had maximized.Another one of my complaints is that there is no index in the on-line version. Luckily, I keep the paper copy near my computer so that I can use the index and even refresh my memory when I need a particular application of After Effects.There were few changes in this book from last year’s version. Experienced users might be better served if the publisher put out a small book that dealt just with changes in After Effects, including practical exercise tutorials.If you want to get the most from the Adobe Creative Suite and you haven’t tried After Effects, I recommend this book.Note: The publisher provided me with a review copy of this book at no charge.

2. Difficult to follow instructions
   I like that it is a resource for After Effects. The plain fact of the matter is that watching Youtube videos to learn about After Effects is probably just as instructive. This textbook is alittle dry. Then I just couldn’t follow a step and started to make assumptions that didn’t work. This expensive textbook is good but not great. So one star for accuracy and another for difficult learning curve.

3. Make sure you download the assets and use the online videos
   I was using an older edition of this book but had updated my software, so I thought I’d better use a newer version. There are SOME small changes in the interface, but overall, I think I would have been okay with the 2020 release. This book provides 15 hands-on lessons. I’ve found that if you can’t get the assets downloaded from Adobe Press and you can’t watch the videos while doing the projects and reading the book, the book can be confusing and in some cases just plain wrong. Some of the Windows keystrokes that were suggested just don’t work in Windows 11. I just Googled the keystroke and found the correct information online. This book does not do much as far as explaining what the best preferences should be or how to set up the cache folder, etc. A glossary of terms would have been helpful and a more detailed overall workflow would have been nice. But overall, I think the book did a very good job of showcasing some key areas of After Effects. Anyone who gets this book should definitely register the book, launch the web videos, download the assets and complete each section. The videos combined with the text of the book give a much clearer point of reference for actions you’re supposed to take in developing compositions.

4. Hopefully the 2023 book is better
   I bought the Premiere Pro book and it was good so I gave this one a shot, watch YouTube videos because this book is only good as fire starter. Unclear instructions and complicated first steps. The interface has changed a little but did anyone actually try to use this book? I am familiar with the naming and layout from other Adobe products but wow this one is bad.

5. They think were all crooks!
   To download the exercise files to start the book they give you an open book test to prove you have it . You know the third work in the fifth step of exercise 2. If I knew what a pain it was going to be I would have bought the hard copy or probably a different book.

6. It lays everything out in plain, simple language and is well illustrated with photoshots
