Great read for people looking to move to Azure
The content is highly informative, providing valuable insights into strategies for optimizing an organization’s cloud adoption. What stood out most to me as unique in the book was that in each chapter, the authors delved into multiple important topics in detail. For instance, one author compared using the cloud to renting a car. This approach made it feel like I was engaged in an ongoing conversation with the authors, enhancing my understanding from various perspectives.I particularly appreciated the sidebar on ‘multi-cloud.’ Many authors and organizations often assume multi-cloud without discussing it in-depth. Chapter 3’s recommendation regarding ‘organizational readiness’ for cloud adoption, which includes taking inventory of the current IT landscape and assessing staff capabilities, was also noteworthy. The emphasis on continual learning and addressing ‘knowledge gaps’ added value to the content. One suggestion for improvement could be to include a high-level mapping of the Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework (MS CAF) to the FinOps Framework. Additionally, there was limited mention of the importance of ‘tagging’ in the context of cloud management.
Prepare yourself for a cloud adoption and understanding the challenges of this transformation.
Cloud transformation and adoption is a challenge to many organizations. Packt Publishingâs Azure Cloud Adoption Framework Handbook by Sasa Kovacevic and Darren Dempsey provides the guidance that organizations are asking for in undertaking this transformation. The authors do an excellent job of breaking down each phase of the Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework on Azure in easy-to-understand steps. What is particularly helpful is the first section of the book that outlines how to prepare yourself for a cloud adoption and understanding the challenges of this transformation.
Extraordinary compilation of real-life scenarios and invaluable lessons learned
The “Azure Cloud Adoption Framework Handbook” is an extraordinary compilation of real-life scenarios and invaluable lessons learned. It goes beyond mere performance optimization, highlighting the essential emphasis on governance, privacy, and security.I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone seeking to construct a comprehensive strategy coupled with an actionable plan. It is specially tailored for Cloud Engineers, System Architects, and IT Managers. Dive into its insights and empower your journey to success in the Azure cloud!
CAFs trusted companion.
What I really liked about this book is the added value to the free online resources in terms of the experience and gotchas learned along the way. It’s also great that you are guided to pick the stuff that will help your organization and also your specific case. And yes – it contains humor and history references. Recommending it.
I have read to page 40 now, and the authors still struggle to answer the fundamental question, “What exactly is the benefit of this book.” You should also be aware that the authors seem intent on using brackets to inject what they view as “humor” into literally every paragraph. Here is an example taken from page 26:”One struggle the account teams in the hyperscale cloud providers have (and yes, that includes the account team that works with you) is your speed of adoption, which is limited (and therefore impacts their KPIs and their promotions and bonuses) by your struggles with getting things done quickly, at scale, and with definitive and recognizable business benefits.”As a reader of technical books, I’m looking for facts and helpful information as efficiently as possible. I don’t need to understand a vendor’s compensation model, and I don’t need the author to speculate on how one account team differs from another. The author’s insistence on injecting useless information in every second sentence is frustrating. Another example from just page 26:”Should you read all about every cloud service or just focus on the subset that your organization is adopting? Another great question, you absolute legend…”I didn’t ask the question, so please don’t say, “Great question, you absolute legend.” It’s not funny, doesn’t convey any additional value or information, and when repeated several times per page, just increases the amount of reading that adds no value. I regret purchasing this book and providing this review to warn others and save them the frustration of wasting their money.
A great book for absolutely anyone managing, migrating, interested or learning about Cloud! And I mean any cloud, even though the book is called Azure, many of its teachings can be used for other Cloud service providers. Many lessons and practical experiences to guide you along your journey.Definitely recommend!
