A fantastic story about a man with a dream and the fortitude to see it through to the end.
This was a great read about a man with a passion for his heritage, a vision of a company in the highly competitive high tech business and a wish to empower an indigenous people in his home state of North Dakota. The saga vividly details the ups and downs of a business start up in a tough business using the talents of tribal people without any hope for a future. From turning the business finances over to his beautiful and talented wife who admittedly had spending issues of her own to the banker telling his account was in a “workout” situation, which in effect is saying they didn’t want his business anymore, the tale puts you right in the middle of his day to day trials and tribulations. His commitments to his alma mater, North Dakota State University and his dying home town of Underwood North Dakota are a testament to his desire to support endeavors that may seem at the time to be lost causes. Its a great read for anyone thinking about starting a business or anyone that has and either succeeded or failed. It’s a fantastic story about a family involved from beginning to end of a startup business. It was a fun book to read.
Every entrepreneur should read this ‘grit to gold’ story!
As a serial entrepreneur, I love to read and learn from other fellow entrepreneurs. Loved this book as it ‘hit home’ for me from starting a new business on a budget and that hard work, a great attitude and following the Golden Rule always pays off. I admire risk takers and this book highlights several risky situations and how this business owner prevailed time and time again in tough situations. A nice personal touch as well showcasing that countless hours of building a business can be balanced with a solid family life. Learned a lot about culture and opening new markets as well. Solid book and entertaining…..highly recommend.
Inspiring and interesting!
This book provides a fascinating view into the early computing industry, along with what it takes to create a successful start up company, from financing and leadership to risk management, employee and community relationships and more. I found inspiration in John Miller’s humble beginnings, holding true to his values of faith, family, community and hard work, and then creating opportunity in an under-served community. This is not a dry business book, but rather one that is full of heart and lessons that come alive through colorful stories.
