A great, comprehensive book
Implementing an MBSE program is a challenging endeavor, but fortunately, Jon Holt’s latest book, “Systems Engineering Demystified,” offers invaluable guidance throughout the journey. This extensive 500-page tome establishes a robust ontological foundation and systematically builds upon it, leveraging models to foster a shared comprehension of the subject matter. Encompassing all facets of systems engineering, from modeling and verification to lifecycle management, processes, methodologies, management, and more, the book also aligns seamlessly with industry standards like ISO 15288, SAFe, and OOSEM. What sets this book apart is its accessibility â it’s not just for seasoned Systems Engineers; even individuals outside this field will find it easy to follow. Furthermore, each chapter concludes with a helpful summary, self-assessment exercises, and a comprehensive list of references, making it an indispensable resource.I found “Systems Engineering Demystified” by Jon Holt to be an exceptionally insightful and practical resource. Its clear explanations, structured approach, and comprehensive content made it an invaluable tool for my MBSE journey.Highly recommend!
Great book to learn more about systems
I’ve been programming for over 10 years. I don’t really need to pick up a new programming language book to learn the syntax, but what I do need more of is programming theory. This book has helped me to think a bit differently when I begin a new project.I like how the author explains very thoroughly what’s involved when modeling a system and even what is a system. It’s also good to get the refresher that we need to remember about our stakeholders.I highly recommend people to pick up this book and give it a read.
Well-written Text
This is a sophisticated University-level text in second edition. I use it in a senior-level undergrad engineering class – students appreciate its readability. It does not focus on quantitative analysis, and in that sense, it de-mystifies the subject mater.
Information
This book is a valuable resource for anyone seeking a clear and practical guide to modern systems engineering. The author’s expertise and the inclusion of relevant examples make this book an excellent choice for students and professionals looking to enhance their understanding and application of model-based systems engineering techniques.

The diagrams and visual aids complement the explanations perfectly, making it even easier to visualize complex processes. One of the aspects I appreciate the most is the book’s interactive approach. Thought-provoking exercises and case studies at the end of each chapter challenged me to apply what I had learned. This not only reinforced my understanding but also prepared me to tackle real-world systems engineering challenges. Moreover, the author’s emphasis on collaboration and communication within multidisciplinary teams resonated with me. These soft skills are often overlooked in technical books, but they are critical in the field of systems engineering. I like the structured way of building up the body of knowledge about MBSE. The text is easy to read and understand, and makes sense.
[E-book versions reviewed (Kindle & PDF formats)]This is a fantastic overview of Systems Engineering by Professor Jon Holt, in which he covers many of the fundamentals of Systems Engineering in simple and clear language. However, this is enriched through the use of SysML models, which helps to visually represent the topics he explains in a variety of diagrams. Put simply, he uses Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to represent the topics in the book, which is a fantastic way to learn MBSE. Whilst the heavy use of SysML diagrams may seem repetitive at first, the consistency and coherent use of such models really helps to explain the concepts easily. In a lot of ways, this book is an expansion of another book written by Jon and published by INCOSE UK; Don’t Panic! The absolute beginners’ guide to MBSE. Not only does he expand on the concepts covered in there, it is one reference captured in the book alongside many other publications and literature, which makes this a really useful repository if you are looking for another book to support your development as a systems engineer.I also appreciate that the publisher, Packt, provides an opportunity to download a DRM-Free PDF version of this book to all customers, regardless if it is the paperback version or the ebook version (e.g. Kindle). In summary, I think this is a fantastic resource for anyone interested in Systems Engineering and should definitely be in your reading list!
