  1. The most important book I’ve read this year!
Credible Threat by Sarah Sobieraj is one of the best books I have read this year. Professor Sobieraj’s book lays out clearly and in graphic detail the kinds of digital misogyny that women experience when they attempt to work in male dominated spaces like gaming, sports, tech and politics. As Sobieraj documents, the harassment they experience on digital platforms has a significant impact on both their professional and personal lives. Her book unpacks not only the incredible violence that these women endure, vitriole that often requires that they embed extra security measures into their daily lives, but the reasons for it. Bringing a feminist theoretical frame to the analysis of interviews allows Sobieraj to explicate the myriad ways in which women face workplace sexual violence in digital spaces that is remarkably similar to that which they experience in physical workplaces. Violence that is deliberate and intentionally deployed to maintain workplace segregation. Sadly, just days after I put this book down, I too, experienced digital misogyny directed at me in a zoom space. Sobieraj’s book allowed me to de-construct and contextualize my own experience so that I was able to move forward in a productive and safe way. A MUST READ if you hope to keep digital space safe for women and other people with marginalized identities.
