MacBook for Dummies
I love the âDummyâ series. They are clear and answer questions that most beginners have. With no idea of the topic they make it easy to understand.
Not the latest MacBook for Dummies
The book is very informative, though not the latest. I bought the book thinking that it was the latest edition, but it still serves my purpose as I have an older MacBook and the information was on point.
Too Difficult to Read and Follow
The intent of this book is well placed, but the reality falls far short of being a useful guide. I understand it is written for dummies, but I feel like I am the dumbest of dummies for trying to follow this manual. First, it is published on a low quality newsprint, thereby making much of the text difficult to read, as there is little contrast between the ink and pages. This is especially a problem when trying to read the computer screen shots, which are of course in black and white. Therefore, the legibility is very compromised. I have also concluded that black and white manuals, which include photos of vibrantly colored computer screens, are basically useless. How dumb do you like to feel? I will be returning this book to Amazon.
Clear, easy to follow Instructions
The authors write clear, easy to follow instructions as they did in their previous versions of this book. Appropriate for those new to Photoshop Elements as well as those of us upgrading to the new version. However, I was disappointed with the delivery. The person placing the book in the mailing envelope was careless causing a large crease in the front cover and several pages.
Good but lacking in depth.
I recently read “MacBook For Dummies” to help me get acquainted with my new MacBook Pro. While the book does a good job covering the basics and is written in the accessible style typical of the “For Dummies” series, I found it to be somewhat lacking in depth. On the positive side, the author, Mark Chambers, provides easy-to-follow instructions for newcomers. Topics like customizing the Dock, using desktop widgets, and navigating macOS are explained clearly. The sections on new features like Stage Manager, Continuity Camera, SharePlay, and Handoff are helpful for users who are entirely new to the Mac ecosystem. However, I was disappointed by the book’s limited scope. It tends to focus heavily on very basic tasks, which might be redundant for anyone with prior computer experience. The coverage of productivity tools and security features felt superficial, leaving out advanced tips that could benefit users looking to deepen their understanding. Additionally, the book’s advice on “existing without an internal DVD drive” seems outdated in an era where most users have already adapted to digital downloads and streaming.Another drawback is that the book doesn’t fully address some of the more powerful capabilities of the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models. Topics like advanced multitasking, in-depth system preferences customization, and professional-level applications are either glossed over or absent. In summary, “MacBook For Dummies” is a decent starting point for absolute beginners who have never used a Mac before. However, if you’re looking for a comprehensive guide that goes beyond the basics and delves into the more advanced features of your MacBook, you might find this book somewhat disappointing.
