Best written tech book I’ve read in a long time
I’ve been following Jay on youtube since I decided to ditch Microsoft for Linux. He is a blend of Sys Admin and teacher. He makes a complicated subject understandable even to a 75 year old retiree. The best way to master Ubuntu server is to listen, watch, read and do. Thanks Jay; GOOD BOOK!
This book is gold, well written.
This is one of few IT books I’d recommand. Reading this book really save a lot of grindings in advancing my career. The knowledge shared in the book is came from real and actual practice in the IT field. I wish there are more authors like Jay.This book is a treasure to me, it is unlike most of the other books I read that were either teaching outdated config or title baits, for example, the “official” CCNP 350-401 book that taught me the outdated ikev1 crypto map config. I own the LPI essential certificate during my college time, but the college course didn’t give me the same confidence as this book. I am now feeling very comfortable and confident with Linux system and I found the beauty in it.I am 100% recommanding this book to everyone are interested in Linux, either for personal or at work. This book will be my reference to go at all time.
Mastering Ubuntu Server
This book provides good experience and examples to make you successful right from the start.
Comprehensive?
I am a huge fan of Jay LaCroix and happy to support him by buying this book. That said, this book is in my opinion fully priced and not very comprehensive. My guess is it has more to do with Packt publishing and less to do with Jay. For sure, the content that is there is good and easy to consume … as per Jay’s style. And to be fair a truly comprehensive book would probably be another 1000 pages long. But a couple examples: cursory coverage of systemd:. eg discussion is on chron, crontab, etc instead of systemd timers. NTP server: if you have an Ubuntu server it would be great to set it up as your LAN NTP server for all your devices to sync time. Here is the coverage in this book “all servers should have the ntp package installed” Really? Do I need to disable systemd-timesyncd? Do I need to limit access by lan? How about setting up an Nginx reverse proxy for LAN services like unifi, pihole, etc? Sorry 3 pages of coverage. I am not trying to run down this book, only suggest that if you are looking for an authoritative comprehensive guide on Ubuntu 22.04, this probably will not be your only purchase. With all the foregoing, I would still buy this book if for no other reason than to support the author.
Highly recommended
Very well written. Everything is clear and well organized. It serves as a good overview of the Ubuntu server and also as a rich reference for specific arguments.
Another phenomenal product from Jay
The latest version provides everything one needs to create and secure an Ubuntu server.Fantastic book Jay!
Very good book
This is a great book. I have learned a lot from Jay’s YT channel and this book is no different. It covers everything you need to know.
This Book is not a comprehensive guide
This book is not a Comprehensive Guide as Everything in it can be found online for Free. Book does not go into any level of detail why 22.04 is using internal loopback IPs vs static in host file. Nor does it go into custom compiling any program such as apache or nginx. This book is not worth the money they have it priced at .
Very useful piece of work
Je l’avais acheté pour du vrai Mastering …De l’industrialisation d’Ubuntu … Créé un master une iso un image avec des packagingsMais c’est un master pour débutant sur Ubuntu … Bon livre mais light paar rapport au titre
Glad to purchase this book as it contains all relevant content I need to familiarise with Ubuntu.
I thought this might have been a good book to fill in any gaps I had in my Ubuntu Server knowledge given its title of “Mastering Ubuntu Server”, but what turned up was a light dusting on topics and very thin on substance. Don’t waste your money. It didn’t help that the copy I got sent had a printing error with everything before page 45 completely missing (see photo).
I bought this book believing it would be somewhat of a comprehensive guide to Ubuntu Serve as that is what the Cover Says .. I purchased this to cover AD and LDAP configuration and management , It did say Comprehensive Guide.. ! When i finally got the book and went looking for these page 32 In this book we don’t cover these – Well if this is the case your book is not comprehensive is it .. DON’T WASTE YOU MONEY ON THIS GARBAGE
