An Intelligent, Honest Page-Turner
Iâve read a lot of Jim Rickardsâ work, yet this book is a surprise. The subtitle speaks of a âthreatâ â which makes the book sound like a downer but in fact it reads like an exhilarating back-and-forth between Rickards and AI that spans the world from China to the Situation Room to the NYSE to an American home.Rickards brings a huge amount of learning to the book (the âSelected Sourcesâ list at the end of the book runs 24 pages!) spanning Homer, Aristotle, Poe, Heidegger, Alan Greenspan, Andy Warhol, Marshall McLuhan, Kissinger, Kubrick and a dazzling number of articles, books and academic papers Iâd never have time to read. Yet all of the book is very readable, a page-turner.The book is full of observations like âWhen a robot trains on propaganda, it repeats propagandaâ and âShowing that a deep learning machine is not as successful at innovation as a child makes a powerful case for excluding such machines entirely.â Rickards warns: âNever anthropomorphize the math.âYet Rickards says AI is here to stay. My favorite sections of the book are the deep dives into history, computer âhallucinationsâ (or âconfabulationsâ as Rickards clarifies) and even an excellent exploration of art beginning with Marcel Duchamp (Jim has long advised fine art as an investment and he knows his stuff). And of course Rickardsâ advice about how to get and keep your money is useful for everyone from the beginning investor to someone rich enough to need to put their wealth in many different places (and Jim knows those places).Last of all, this is a book written with clarity and honesty. For all his intelligence, Rickards never speaks down to his readers. He is patient and they will learn a lot about AI, the world and money. And Jim is humble enough to end with âIf there are any mistakes in this book, theyâre on me.â If there are mistakes in this book, I didnât see them. This book is a must-read at the right time.
Must read, frightening and realistic warning
The first chapter is as good as the scripts of some of Hollywoodâs best âcrashâ movies like Margin Call and Big Short. Jim has the best grasp on why new technology inevitably lead to sharper and faster crashes in financial markets â he also understands the limitations of this technology, since AIs are all built on the same data sets it leads to a sort of market groupthink that can create chaos faster than human systems can respond to. Super thought provoking and fascinating book from one of Americaâs most critical financial thinkers
Excellent Overview of AI Dangers to Money and Society
Jim does it again! This book is an easy read while also being extremely effective in explaining the dangers of AI to our global economy. Jim uses both real world examples and case studies to show exactly how AI could destroy our financial ecosystem, and the need for human empathy to stay in place in world economics. While this book lays out the dangers of AI, Jim also uses his knowledge to provide solutions to keep your money and family safe. Great Read!
MUST READ!! The Sobering Truth Of AI
Jim Rickards has knocked it out of the park, once again. This is a must read, for both professional and retail investors alike. Jim goes into detail of how a ‘terminator’ like scenario could unfold in the financial markets thanks to the unfettered use of Artificial Intelligence. After seeing firsthand how AI has affected schools & education, and how jobs are already being lost due to this technology, this book gives a glimpse into a much BIGGER issue that everyday people don’t see â and even the elite aren’t ready for what’s to come. Scary, but thankful this book teaches you how to prepare for the worst.
Hokey Pollyanna ending
Against AI, itâs up to us to intervene with old-fashioned human logic and common sense before itâs too late? The experts say the difference between AI and humans is like the difference between monkeys and humans. Monkeys can’t possibly intervene with humans, so how can humans intervene against AI when it’s deployed by all the tyrants, despots, criminals, etc? This hokey Pollyanna ending gives me scepticism to the reality of the rest of the book. But it seems all authors think they need to provide hope at the end of doomsday books. Its just I would rather have the facts, only the facts, only the reality. Even with my humble intelligence i can dither that we humans cant avoid the vatious dooms that come with AI. I don’t feel I can give a fair rating, so I’ll just fake 4 stars.
Good Deep Dive into AI + Wall Street’s New Fad
If you’re curious about how AI is changing the game in the financial worldâand what that means for all of usâthis book is defintely worth a read.Rickards does an amazing job of breaking down complex ideas into something that’s easy to understand, providing background into the explosive rise of AI tools like GPT-4 to the deeper implications these technologies have on global finance and national security. He also highlights the potential pitfalls of relying too heavily on AI without human oversightâlike how automated selling could lead to rapid market crashes or how lack of AI oversight could escalate global conflicts. But he also emphasizes the importance of staying informed and proactive. It’s a wake-up call, but one that comes with a roadmap. If you’re interested in finance, tech, or just want to get a handle on where the world could be headed with AI, give this book a read. Highly recommended!
New York Times best selling author does it again
A sensation hit, Jim Rickards is back breaking down the dangers of ai and what it poses to the global financial order.Going into this book I already feared the threats of Ai but not from the angles taken by Jim.The scary part isnât that ai thinks like us but rather the rate it can act and communicate with other technology.Itâs a phenomenal read that challenged my presupposition views on ai numerous times and I highly recommend it!
