This small book is packed with tips, advice, suggestions and literal steps to plan and implement a marketing plan for authors who know little or even hate marketing. Fauzia Burke takes your hand and guides you step by step. She begins with your dreams, helps you establish your priorities, tells you how to implement and closes with the importance of on-going sales monitoring of your published book. She gives helpful tips and advice to implement an online marketing plan including a website, mailing list, blog and social media. Her recommendations hold for first-time self-published authors as well as the experienced or traditionally published. Ms. Burke has devoted her career to marketing authors and supports her advice by including stories of her coaching and support for authors. She writes with a clear direct style that encourages me to sit down and follow her advice step by step.I recommend this book for all of us who are authors resisting and reluctant to market ourselves and our books. Burke provides an easy to guide to help us overcome our foot-dragging. I am motivated get started creating the marketing plan for my book.
A Guidebook for effective online marketing
I wish this book had been available five years ago, when I published my first novel. This is exactly what I was looking for â a blueprint or, maybe a better word, would be a guidebook for developing an online marketing program.Fauzia Burke offers a step-by-step program for how an author can develop an effective online marketing program. Everyone is different and Burkeâs approach is that every marketing program is going to be unique to the individual and the project. She provides the guidelines for an author to figure out the keys to successful marketing: building your brand, identifying your readers, figuring out and defining your goals. Her book is easy to read but it takes a lot of work to implement what she proposes. There is no simple way, and I found that compelling and actually encouraging.
Overall A Good Plan For Beginners
This book was a good read. There were a lot of good tips throughout it, and overall it lays out a good plan for beginners.
Probably best for brand new non-fiction authors.
Let me start with my favorite aspect of this book: I loved the encouraging messages in the opening chapters and the analogy of how building a brand is like having a newborn baby. At first itâs non-stop work with very little return, but if you nurture it, it will continue to grow. That said, thatâs about where the book stopped being useful for me.For one thing this book is clearly geared towards non-fiction authors and I wish this had been specified. Many of the exercises donât really make sense if you write fiction so they were not helpful. The author would give lengthy examples for nonfiction authors and then throw in a vague sentence or two for fiction writers (even once: this may not quite apply for fiction but if you think creatively you can come up with your own solution.)Another thing, for a book about âonline marketingâ this book mentioned Instagram only one time I saw and no mention of the massive #bookstagram community on there at all. Again, this is relevant more to fiction writers who this book does not cater to. (Tiktok and booktok were not mentioned at all.)The advice in this is large swathes of general information also. Excellent for a beginner but Iâve read many other books that covered each of the actual meat of this book in much more detail. (For example Newsletter Ninja goes far deeper on the why and how of building a newsletter list.)That said, if youâre a brand new (preferably traditionally published or aiming to be) non-fiction author this book is probably an excellent start.
An important and indispensible resource for authors
Fauzia Burke is a leading figure in book marketing and publicity and her years of wisdom are distilled into this handy and user-friendly book. I found the book to be an indispensable resource for becoming educated about all the various options authors have to engage today. The book provides a clear map and strategy on how to choose among all these options and define a strategy that works for each author. I also really appreciated Fauzia’s emphasis on audience engagement and building long-term relationships with readers. This is one of the best and most useful “how-to” books out there.
Learn from one of the book industry’s best marketers
It’s both the most overwhelming and exciting time ever to be an author. The most overwhelming because there are an endless amount of ways you can spend your time promoting your book and the most exciting because you have more control over your destiny than ever before. As someone who helps authors build their platforms, I know how tough it can be to stand out from the crowd (especially online) and I was so impressed with Fauzia’s insights in this book. Going beyond the platitudes that fill most online marketing books, Fauzia lives up to her reputation as one of the book industry’s most elite marketing strategists with this insightful book. I recommend it to any author who wants a roadmap for online success.
Fauzia knows what she’s doing!
An online brand has never been more important for authors, yet a meaningful one has never been so elusive! Nobody understands online book marketing like Fauzia Burke. She not only knows how to build a community of loyal followers who identify with your brand, but she will show you how to stay connected with them. There are thousands of things you COULD be doing to market your book and your message. Thatâs the problem. Fauzia gets you focused ONLY on the ones that matter for your brand and guides you to thoughtfully (and relentlessly) execute on them.I have been a book publicist for 25 years. I am sensitive about whom I refer my clients to, and I love referring them to her. They always call and thank me.Dottie DeHartDeHart & Company Public Relations.
