Great book on casual games & gendered design
Chess’ book is an insightful, important work that brings much-needed attention to “casual games” — a wide array of video games, often designed for women, that has been largely overlooked in game studies. I’m a professor and I’ve taught this book with doctoral students. It sparked great conversation about which types of video games do or don’t get valued as “real games” and how cultural norms of gender shape game design.
I’ll preface by saying that I’m an academic who studies games and that is the target audience for this book. However, it is written so that it is fairly accessible too. The book does really interesting work to show how causal games are feminized in games culture and how this is utilized by the game industry to shape and refine this market, Chess’ Player Two of the title.
