I’m a higher ed. instructional coach, and I think all educators should read this book!
I have been an instructional coach at Harvard for over 15 years, and I have known Dan Levy almost that entire time. I can honestly say that Dan is one of the best teachers I have ever met, combining amazing innate teaching instincts with wonderful interpersonal skills and a relentless pursuit of improvement. In joining forces with Angela Pérez Albertos, an excellent teacher in her own right who also brings the lens of a recent student, the two of them have created a book that is timely, insightful, practical, and user-friendly. Generative AI has already dramatically impacted teaching and learning, and it’s influence is only going to grow. This book educates you about where AI is now, provides ideas about where it is going to go, and offers myriad possible uses that you can implement immediately. One important idea in the book is that you should employ AI in your teaching if: You + AI > You alone. I’ll propose a corollary, that you should read this book if: You + AI + This Book > You + AI. And I can pretty much guarantee you that this corollary will hold true for you. I know it has for me!
Grounded, empirical, actionable! For any teacher exploring genAI in teaching
I’m a big fan of Dan Levy’s approach to use of tech in education – and this new book delivers, with rich examples from lots of educators in highed ed and secondary schools. It’s practical and realistic, and chock full of ideas for you to make your own. The new frontiers of genAI are here, and Dan’s book is grounded in his own teaching and close connections with other teachers. Recommend this 100x!
A must read for all educators
Teaching Effectively with ChatGPT” by Professor Dan Levy and co-author Pérez Albertos is a must-read for educators navigating the evolving landscape of AI in education. Since ChatGPT’s introduction in November 2022, the conversation around AI has often been speculative and unclear. This book stands out by providing practical, concrete strategies for integrating AI into teaching, all grounded in solid pedagogical principles.Levy and Albertos draw from their extensive experience at Harvard, insights from global educators, and direct feedback from students. The book is packed with real-world examples that illustrate how AI can enhance teaching and learning. For instance, educators like Ethan Mollick at the University of Pennsylvania and Danny Liu at the University of Sydney have used ChatGPT to create engaging explanations and examples. Harvard professors such as Greg Bruich and Raj Chetty have designed customized chatbots to help students practice problem-solving and develop specific skills.Additionally, the book offers innovative approaches like those of Fernando DÃaz del Castillo, who has successfully nudged high school students in Colombia to use ChatGPT to enhance their learning experience.Building on the success of Levy’s “Teaching Effectively with Zoom,” this book provides valuable guidance on leveraging not only ChatGPT but also other generative AI tools to teach more effectively. Itâs an essential guide for any educator looking to harness the power of AI to improve their teaching methods and student outcomes.
A timely and helpful book on how to use AI to improve teaching in higher education
In this original and highly readable book, Dan Levy and Angela Perez Albertos provide a range of suggestions for how professors and teachers can use Artificial Intelligence to improve their teaching. The book is structured using a helpful framework that covers the design and improvement of classes, the preparation of pre-class activities, instruction, assessment and student support. Drawing on examples from their own teaching experience, and from the experiences of colleagues, Dan and Angelaâs engaging prose activates the readerâs imagination about possible pedagogical experiments that will support more effective learning using machine learning algorigthms trained on large language models such as ChatGPT.Written in 2024, this book reflects the very early days of the incorporation of AI chatbots into teaching. It is not yet possible to know the direction of the transformation of teaching and learning that this tool will enable. It is certain, however, that such transformation will be informed by more experimentation of the sort this book invites the readers to undertake. For this reason, because it offers an invitation and the frameworks to include all readers in the exciting adventure of reinventing teaching and learning, this is a transformational book, which will have profound implications for the use of AI in education. It should be read by anyone who wants to improve the effectiveness of their teaching. It will rekindle the curiosity and the joy of helping others learn.Fernando M. ReimersFord Foundation Professor of the Practice of International EducationHarvard Graduate School of Education
Ease of use and practicality reign; you’ll be able to put the concepts to use immediately.
The authors clearly know their audience. Although the duo is surely steeped in an academic life of theory and research–and those elements show through–they have written a simple “How-to” manual for practitioners and any instructor who has a practitioner facet to them. My favorite put-this-to-use-right-away features:⢠All prompts are compiled in the companion website so the reader can easily cut and paste.⢠The authors use visual cues that make it easy to recognize patterns and skim to the parts of the text that are immediately useful.⢠The authors “show their thinking”–explaining how and why they’ve crafted a prompt and follow-up prompt–which is a powerful learning tool for the reader. They show how they refine their prompts and experiment with language to a) understand the power and limits of the LLM, and b) get the output they’re seeking to make them better instructors.
An outstanding resource for educators
“Teaching Effectively with ChatGPT” is an outstanding resource for educators looking to integrate AI into their teaching practices. The book provides clear, practical strategies and innovative approaches to enhance classroom engagement and learning outcomes. Levy’s insights are both profound and accessible, making this a must-read for teachers at all levels. A game-changer in educational technology!
