with excellent end notes documenting his sources
This is a must read for anyone who uses social media. Silverman does not break new ground, but he pulls together an enormous amount of information from many sources relating to the use of data mining, surveillance, the social and psychological effects of almost universal use (among younger people, at least – I’m 67 and found Facebook thoroughly repugnant) of “connection” networks. “If you aren’t paying for the product, you ARE the product.” There is too much in it that I didn’t know for me to cover it. It’s 370 pages and there is no fluff, it’s solid info, with excellent end notes documenting his sources. If you use social media, you need to read this book in order to make some attempt to protect yourself.
I especially liked his current argument against the sharing economy
A very strong argument against the status quo of a social media acceptance. Silverman makes a convincing argument and practices what he preaches by withdrawing from social media himself, i.e, Twitter. I especially liked his current argument against the sharing economy, specifically, Uber. This is a must read for anyone interested in how of technological fixes do not necessarily cure chronic non-technological, policy problems. Well done.
An entertaining exposée about the rights we sign away everytime we click “I accept”
Great read! Awoke a little of the conspiracy theorist in me, but rightfully so. I am always concerned with the disclaimers people don’t read and sign anyway because they want whatever it is they are unknowingly signing away their freedom to. A little scary that we now pay to be part of a 1984-like society of our own making. This is a good book for everyone and is entertaining as well.
PROTECT YOUR PRIVACY!
It is an all too real and frightening analysis of our future. It is a powerful analysis of what is happening to our privacy rights. It is a book that should be widely read, and discussed, especially by the younger generations. I highly recommend this book.

such a good book. He is well-researched and goes deep into the subject. You’ll learn a lot–I can’t say you’ll like what you learn, but it’s an important and well-written book.
book hasn’t been fact checked
This book is garbage. On page 139, the author says Nike is the maker of Fitbit. That’s not true. Fitbit is a company in SF. Fitbit isn’t made by Nike. This book is in need of serious fact checking.I can save you the trouble of reading it. His basic conclusion: you have no privacy with social media. You don’t need to read this book in order to know that.
Great & Timely read
I really enjoyed this and think he was ahead of his time.
Five Stars
Very interesting and informative. It held my attention throughout. If the technology is free, you are the product!
Poco da dire, libro ben scritto, interessante e con una mastodontica bibliografia.Terrificante il mondo che sta arrivando.
