Fantastic Distillation of a Complex Topic
Solomon’s Code was a joy to read. It did a fantastic job of distilling and demystifying AI for the everyday reader. The content and examples were accessible, interesting, and brought the issues to life. At the same time, the book is exceptionally well researched – with insights spanning well outside of the technical arena, from medicine, to history, to criminality. A great, in-depth illustration of just how far-reaching the impact of these emerging technologies will go. I would strongly recommend it to anyone, regardless of background, who is simply curious about the role that technology is playing in shaping the future.
Extremely interesting view in COVID-19 time
I read this book before COVID-19 and now it looks in a completely different light. Here is one question the author asks in the book:”we might also start to limit our choices, blocking off some enriching pathways in life because of a small chance they could lead to disastrous outcomes. If I want to make a risky choice, will I be the only one who has agency over that decision? Can my employer discriminate against me because I decided not to take the safest path? Have I sacrificed an improbable joy for fear of a possible misfortune?”Does this sound like a prophet who could foresee COVID-19 limitations? When I read this, this question looked silly and the answer was obvious to me – “of course I am responsible for my own decisions related my my own life”. Now clearly the answer is – “not so fast”. Not only an employer can discriminate agains someone who “choose to make a risky choice”, one can actually go to jail if they do.
Excellent book on AI and what it means to us as a society
The book covers a range of domains where AI plays a key role, which makes it accessible and digestible to a spectrum of people. Everyone can identify applications they most closely resonate with, and more importantly, get a glimpse of the problem-solution dilemma in terms they can action – feeling empowered to be a decision maker in the world of the future. An excellent read, which I can already see revisiting time and time again.
A good guide on AI policy
This book is a good guide on how AI policy might look like – at least in the preliminaries. A book to reread
Important Introduction to Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence is widely recognized by opinion leaders, technology and financial experts, and others as a major issue for the coming years. ‘Solomon’s Code: Humanity in a World of Thinking Machines’ is an outstanding introduction to AI and its implications for key sectors that affect us all.As the title implies, the authors have thought deeply about the relationship between human agency and imagination and the artificial intelligence rising in our midst. Ultimately, it is our humanity that will be required for wise decisions to deploy AI.Mark Nitzberg and Olaf Groth do a great service, translating complex issues to a wide audience. This can result in greater citizen participation in otherwise arcane issues, and can create a bridge between various disciplines that may be redefined as new AI applications evolve.
Human centric view on AI
This book provides an excellent perspective on AI today and tomorrow, with all it challenges and necessary decisions ahead of us. It helps the novice to get an understanding of the depth AI will change the way we live.
