Complexity, personality without schmaltz and great concepts.
Only about 30% thru it, but it is an excellent read. As I only read perhaps a 6-10 pages a night I need a book that has ‘flow’ even when shifting between characters. I mostly love concepts and this has them in spades. Thumbs up!Jim
It is a great read!
Will Carlos and the gang survive? Will the free bots really be free? Macleod is in high form, the usual combination of politics and humor that makes his SF so utterly distinctive. Rather than spoil the fun, just read it.
MacLeod as good as ever.
Ken MacLeod in good form. Plenty of plot and character development, and a slightly more middle of the road political sensibility than you find in a lot science fiction.
Finalist for the 2017 Prometheus Award for libertarian SF
The Corporate Wars series of books (both of them!) have been chosen as finalists for the 2017 Prometheus Award for libertarian science fiction novel. I highly recommend them. If you’ve heard of the Alt-Right, you’ll immediately recognize the logical extension of their beliefs to both near and far future history. This group of reactionaries is called the Reaction or Rax. The books don’t really have the equivalent of the existing progressive left in the future. Instead, there is a classically liberal and transhumanist group, the Acceleration or Axe. Both of these groups become involved in technological terrorism in the near future and are defeated by The Direction, a quasi-government headed by AI’s. However, both groups still exist underground. The fourth group of major players are the newly sentient robots seeking their freedom. Lots of action and adventure, a virtual reality based upon a fantasy game in book 2, and space opera to go along with your philosophical musings. Excellent.
Like all Ken MacLeod: great stuffComplex multiple threads storyVery deep and interesting thinking about life and conscienceStrong charactersJust read it!
The first book was fascinating and had an interesting plot. This one spends a lot of time summarizing the previous plot from various perspectives. It is not bad at all. But right now, while reading the first 6 chapters, i find myself wishing for some progress.
Looking forward to the third!
Excellent second novel in the series. Great ideas: well worth the money.
