Excellent
This is an excellent sequel and nicely progresses the story and characters. I am looking forward to enjoying the next book!
Enjoyable
This was a good read. The characters are well rounded and fun. I am enjoying the series, so far. On to the next book.
A great installment in the series
This was a great read, building on everything that was enjoyable in the first book. Aleron Kong is clearly growing as an author. He keeps the reader’s interest throughout the book and as the character has grown, as the stage has widened, the challenges have exceeded any growth by a wide margin. The author has succeeded in maintaining dramatic tension. The character seems to have more to lose, to be on the precipice of greater success or heartache with each chapter, which is a nice balancing act. In many stories in the genre, the mechanics overwhelm or the gains become increasingly pointless. Not so, here.Aleron Kong has avoided many of the pitfalls of the genre, deftly balancing character growth and world-building with challenge that adds to the dramatic tension. This is a nice trick, considering we generally know the conventions of the genre, which usually means we know what to expect next.. but not so much here. Forging is like watching a poker tournament where the game started with a spotlight on one table, where the tournament has 128 tables with 8 players each. In the first book the main character made it past the first round. He has some winnings from the first round but the stakes just keep increasing. In poker, as they say, you’re playing your opponents. Here, in round two, every one seated at the table was a winner from the first round. His opponents are smarter. There are familiar characters from the first round, but interesting new characters from this table, and some glimpse into the challenges he’ll face if he makes it past this round. The outcome is becoming more highly speculative.Every now and then the main characters play smart for a few hands and then the author has them go all in, putting everything on the table. It’s fun to watch the characters lose a hand, now and then, watch the interplay between the characters as they fold a hand or raise the ante. It’s fun watching the author double the blinds. It’s fun to watch the author throw an interesting prize into the center of the table that changes the game …I’m looking forward to Alliances, the next installment in the series.
Liked the first book; Loved the rest
Quality of writing improves a lot in this and the following books. The first book was enjoyable, but I really started to love this series in the second book. Here’s why:1.The world was continually fleshed out. More detail was added in way that let you know that this world was really, really big and that the main character wasn’t anywhere close to figuring out everything that was going on.2.The quality of writing and pacing improved. The author still has a grammatical error every hundred pages or so, but now I felt the writing really draw me in. These are a series I can read over and over, and it really feels like I’m playing my favorite rpg video game; only it hasn’t been invented yet but would probably look like this world.3. Finally, and most importantly, the dialogue becomes FANTASTIC. If there is one thing I have seen Aleron Kong do that no other author I have read does, no matter how experienced, it’s that when he writes comradery realistically. Sion and Richter joke between themselves like you would expect, and have probably heard, guys joke between themselves. No flat, emotionless words that you can’t believe, no “Frodo could never have gotten far without Sam; kiss me Samwise, I love you,” dialogue that suggests MORE than a brotherhood; just two guys that would fight and die for each others dreams as well as the world they’re trying to build. The author seems to continue to develop this strength and I’ve never seen an author write this type relationship this well.If you like litrpgs AND good writing, and liked the first book, buy this one. I won’t need to tell you to buy the rest; you’ll do that on your own.
Keeps you coming back for more!
I’m actually about to start book 5 but decided that I’ve enjoyed them enough to go back and write some more reviews! They are not overly short books, but once you’re hooked you’ll be blowing through them at light speed! The first book was definitely amazing, but the second one reaches new heights. With all of the main information established the writer was really able to let loose and released creative and fearsome enemies, evolved dungeons and skill mastery, witty humor and references, deeper background for characters and brief but raw moments where the emotion sneaks up on you. There were a couple of spots where the reality of the moment just floods in. I even caught myself beginning to cry a few times, although several of them were out of laughter as well. I promise that if you are a fan of this style of literature you will find your curiosity and your will to survive cleverly written cliffhangers to be thoroughly tested.
This second book is a masterpiece. From character building, to plot development, to the design of the riddles, traps, all the thought put in the dungeon… I am amazed. The beginning, for me, was slow. I was so high in the fight from the action on the first book, that I was expecting action from start to finish, so it was a shock when that was not what I got. That is on me. But then, when things started to get heated it was one after the other and it was glorious. The dungeon in this book is so well developed, with so many ramifications… Really good! And the ending I have no words to express how much anxiety it would give me have I had to wait for the third book. I canât wait to read more!
Este libro se centra sobretodo en la exploración de mazmorras. Construye un poco más a los protagonistas y centra un más la historia. A por el siguiente.
We are starting to see the grand schemes T H E L A N D Hope it goes even grander
This was once again a fun read. Story is much more hashed out in book two and more captivating. Looking forward to book three and seeing where this goes, there are still some unanswered questions….
I struggled with the first 45% but not sure why as I loved the first book in theSeries. I’m so glad I persisted though as I ended up enjoying this more than the first one. I never give spoilers in my reviews I just leave a star rating and a brief description of what I enjoyed or disliked. I think most fantasy fans will enjoy this regardless of the RPG aspects of the book, so don’t let that put you off. Even if these books didn’t have the RPG aspects in the book it would still be a very good book. All in all a very good read , likeable characters and very good world building. Read it, what’s not to like.
