Introduction

Today’s world is awash with images, but what makes people stop scrolling or walking by? What makes them remember an image or a photographer’s work? In my mind, it’s the stories they tell. Stories are the real ‘influencers’. The aim of this book is to help you create lasting photographs, the sort Dorothea Lange called ‘second lookers’. using a tried-and-tested approach that puts the story at the heart of everything you do.

We’ll start with the basics, including what equipment you need and the essence of a great photograph. Then we’ll examine the craft of storytelling and how this can be applied to photography. From there, the book follows the process of making a photo story. In each section you will find step-by-step exercises illustrating fundamental techniques and projects to challenge your creativity and broaden your skill set. You’ll also find tips, creative briefs and plenty of real-world examples.

Storytelling 101

Great leaders tell great stories. They know how to spin a good yarn and it’s these tales that capture and direct our attention. Thanks to social media platforms like Instagram, anyone can share their stories quickly, allowing others to live vicariously through their experiences. In this chapter, I’m going to break down the process behind telling stories and look at how we can apply these techniques to photography. By the end, you’ll have learned an easy-to-follow method for creating compelling photo stories from your own experiences and ideas.

11

Step 1: Pitch

A strong online presence is an essential part of any photographer’s business and it’s necessary to present a polished and professional shop front. However, it’s just as important to deliver a sense of your own personality to prospective clients. Let’s face it, everyone wants to be a photographer these days! You can’t rely on your image making capabilities alone to win contracts; you’ve got to show you’re cool to work with too! In this chapter, we’ll run through building websites, curating an Instagram feed, the art of negotiation and how to handle yourself on client calls – essentially, everything you need to start landing work and getting paid for the images you make.

33

Step 2: Prep

By failing to prepare, you prepare to fail – Benjamin Franklin

I live by the above quote, and I am meticulous when it comes to shooting preparation, from building mood boards and shot lists right through to considering the psychological properties of colour. A vast amount of planning and prep work is needed ahead of the shoot day. In this chapter, we’ll dig into these different tasks and techniques, which will help you work more efficiently and produce more impactful images

44

Step 3: Shoot

Shoot day has arrived! All your planning and creative preparation have led to today. In this chapter, I’ll offer tips for working with models and talent, detail the type of lenses and camera settings I use, and provide some tried and-tested lighting strategies. I’ll also run through a range of shooting techniques for you to experiment with.

55

Step 4: Edit

Welcome to the edit suite! I really love this part of my job, as it’s where I get to actually work with the photographs captured on shoot day and really begin to pull a story together. In this chapter, we’ll run through the basics, like importing images from your card into Lightroom, establishing naming conventions, folder structures and using rating systems. We’ll also touch on colour grading within Lightroom, creating presets and adding film-inspired imperfections. We’ll then finish with a relatively detailed and crucial section on backing up your images.

66

Step 5: Deliver

Congratulations – you’re nearly there and your wrap party awaits! Long-standing relationships and repeat clients are the goals for a freelancer, so it pays to make every interaction you have with a client as professional as possible. Don’t fall at this final hurdle. Delivering photographs to a client in a timely, efficient manner will stand you in good stead for future work. In this chapter, we’ll look at file types, colour profiles, sharpening images and a slick web based image-delivery system.

  1. Awesome Book with a Great Set of Detail
I picked this book up for a photography project I was working on for school. I originally thought I would only need a few sections of content from it, but after getting started with the read, it turned out to be way better than I expected. The format and layout of the chapters is perfect for anyone looking to get into photographic storytelling and the example imagery throughout is absolutely stunning.

  2. A recipe for storytelling
Storytelling is often used (and misused!) especially now, in the days of social media. You will find the term utilized to “elevate” just a regular photo, as if it had a mysterious aura. But what storytelling really is in photography? The book tries, and accomplishes, in my mind, answering this very demanding question. The message is surprisingly simple: location, character, and event. Oh, and don’t say too much! I guess many of us are guilty of that, trying to over explain, not being confident enough in the stories we tell. The chapter on the importance of shop type (establishing shots, transition shots etc) was an eye opener. I have already started looking at my narratives this way. Combined with very specific examples how to incorporate this technique into Lightroom workflow, creates a very powerful tool that builds craft confidence. But the book goes beyond that, and it does brilliant work mapping out “storytelling” from an idea to a delivery to the client (even if the client is just you, and your personal project!). There are exercises along the way too, with my personal favorite project called “Everyday Cinematic”. You just have to get the book to find out what that is! Finally, it is worth mentioning, that with its matte paper and expertly arranged photography, the book is always a joy to pick up for a brief moment or a spell of deep work.Dorota Dudek-Thien

  3. Get ready to go up a level with your photography
I often peruse books on photography and get lost in the technical jargon and put the book down. I came across this book and instantly connected with it. In fact, I read it cover to cover and went back and enjoyed the suggestions during a second reading. The examples are practical and anyone can follow along. The imagery is beautiful and a book that I will refer back to many times. I love it when I can apply something from a teacher and immediately see the benefits. This book will do that for you. Every image should tell a story and this will help you put the finishing touches on those stories. Get this book for yourself and order copies to give to your photog buddies for Christmas.

  4. Good Read and Informative
It is an excellent book for photographers who have some photography experience and who are looking to take their photography to the next level. The images are great to look at and Finn provides very good examples and exercises to help you become a better visual storyteller. If you are a beginner and looking for more detail instructions, I would still recommend this book, but as a supplement to any how to/beginner photography books out there. As you get better, you would want to have this book handy 🙂

  5. Exactly what I was looking for
This took a long time to get to us, but it was well worth the wait. It was like every part of it was exactly what I was looking for. I loved the colors, the photos, the explanations and advice. It is not a “how to do photography” book but a “how to tell a story with your photos” book. Highly recommended if that’s what you’re looking for.

  6. Interesting and easy to read
The book is interesting and easy to read. I like the design of it. Some of the tips that author shares with reader really workable and generally Finn summaries everything in very understandable way for beginners. Despite of the fact the some information isn’t new it still not boring to go through it.

  7. Practical and Well Structured
Amazing insight into the process beginning with the ideas/prepping/inspiration to shooting to delivering. This book truly captures Finn’s brilliant approach and is layed out with practical examples/visuals, which is SUPER helpful to be able to refer back to. He covers it all in this 150+ pages and gives it to you straight.Unlike any online workshop, the book is something compact/tangible that you can bring with you wherever you are. Lots of little nuggets packed in..would recommend 10/10 to any inspiring photographers, especially those who are looking to grow their passion into a career.

  8. A Must-Have for Photographers!
I’ve taken a handful of courses over the years from different photographers, both in-person and online. This book is not only beautifully laid out, but it is filled with educational content for a fraction of the cost of what most photographers seem to be offering these days! To be able to have a physical resource on hand at all times is truly invaluable. I’m looking forward to leveraging all the information and material Finn has poured into this book.

  9. Well organized book with useful content and practice exercises. Great for teachers. Awesome resource for visual storytelling, applying cinematography techniques to still photography.

  10. This is a wonderful and practical book for everyone not just those looking to charge for their work. Why ? The level of detail provided is incredible, for example , it takes you through a comprehensive structure on how to build a story (photos) which can apply to any photographer. I found myself thinking about using the process to help improve my own photography which I do not sell. From the commercial side the detail and approach is breathtaking and you forget what needs to be considered should you want to sell your work and how’s to build your proposition. Reference to the Getty price framework was revealing and for me something I had not seen before. A great read, awesome value
