I purchased this book for my 12 year old, who is already designing video games. He has learned from reading the book. The illustrations were engaging to keep up interest.

This feels like a social studies book that focuses on video games. If you actually want to write games (or more likely, want your child to learn how to program) is pretty much useless. it does talk about the higher level skills of planning, etc., but very little about actually getting started.
