Understand What Lies Beneath Our Need to Visualize
This book provides both a sound foundation of premises, and a thoroughly developed series of design choices with rationales and instructions. Itâs a fine place to start a journey in viz!
This book will make a Data Visualization Analyst Out of You
Not the easiest read, but very valuable. Breaks down the visualization tradecraft down to the fundamentals. Explains what elements to use, when to use them, and why. Cites numerous interesting research papers for further reading. This book will give you a strong academic background in Data Visualization; pairs well with books that teach you how to use specific tools such as Tableau or PowerBI.
this one is my favorite for teaching and research briefs
Of many visualization books I’ve read through, this one is my favorite for teaching and research briefs. Very good visualization book for practical design and research. I like the focus on data and analysis tasks to drive visual design. Pair this with Tufte’s Visual Display of Quantitative Information, and you’re set to help newcomers understand visualization in the modern age of visual analytics.
Class textbook
I used the book as a textbook for and upper level, undergraduate data visualization course.
Five Stars
The book is great and up to date look in today’s infographics and research.
This is a great book, beyond the cliches abundant in the field
This is a great book, beyond the cliches abundant in the field. GREAT Book for people who loves to think…
A ‘Perfect’ Visualization of Visualizations
Exactly the book I’ve been searching for!Gratitude to Professor Munzner.MFA Student @ UTDallas
Theoretical framework with few actual visualization examples makes this difficult to understand
I appreciate the fact that the author so carefully considered and developed a conceptual framework for visualization. I can even appreciate how enthusiastic experts in visualization would be about the content that so wonderfully synthesizes the material. The essential problem is that the author takes a fun, interesting topic and makes it dense, difficult, and boring to get through for people that don’t have previous background in the topic. Verbose theoretical framework descriptions and written examples are not a substitute for actual pictures. I would think a textbook about visualization would actually have – well – more visualizations. Some of the examples that do exist are ridiculously complicated such as those in chapter 3. Compare this to “Show Me The Numbers”. That book is big and thick and intimidating until you start reading it and the approachable content and liberal examples that make it a breeze to get through. This is a much smaller book but it’s painful to read for the intended audience that is trying to understand the concepts being communicated for the first time.
I was searching for a book giving a 360 view of theorical data visualization and this book fulfilled my needs. Very satisfied.
Munzner creates an excellent summary of all the important literature in the field, synthesizing it into frameworks that are relevant and extremely useful in designing visualization. Munzner provides a good solid number of examples of different approaches to visualizing data given a certain type and task, as well as how they break down into the respective frameworks. With each chapter, she drawn on a LOT of literature from the field to outline best practices concerning each possible aspect of visualization. There is little in the way of concrete code or instructions on how to create this in a visualization tool or environment. This is both a positive and negative. Many other books in the field focus heavily on a specific toolset and is thereby limited by the design options they provide, which this book avoids. However, I found the book’s described methodology leading me to design choices that I think are correct for the task, but difficult or impossible to visualize with the technological tools I have available. Though, this was hardly a huge issue.I found the one down side to be that while Munzner adequately describes how to break down data and task into abstractions, there is little in the way of direction of how to connect those to the visualization you are trying to design. It was only over trying to use this multiple times before we started to see why it was useful to break it down those ways. Overall though, this is a very useful and systematic way of building visualizations and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to create effective ones.
A good read!
Recurso bibliográfico absolutamente recomendado para quien quiera iniciarse en la visualización de datos y en cualquier plan de estudios de esta disciplina. Detallado, metodológico y crÃtico. Profuso en ejemplos.
An excellent and accessible overview to the study of visualization. Highly recommended.
