The Ultimate Tale of the Horrors of Being Stalked…Online and Off.
Sometimes, not often, but occasionally a book comes along that has the ability to haunt the reader in extremely…extreme ways. Susan Fenstenâs harrowing, terrifying memoir, âYou Have a Very Soft Voice, Susanâ is one of those rare books.I know there is an unquantifiable amount of people who have dealt with âcyber stalkingââmyself includedâand itâs a terrifying experience no matter what. Susanâs ordeal? Well…it exists in an entirely new circle of Hell all its own. When Dante composed his horrifying visions of the circles of Hell, if he had somehow seen into the future and glimpsed the nightmare of Susanâs journey, well…I think he may have been compelled to add a 10th Level. Now, Iâm not going to delve into details (snag this book immediately); I leave the nightmarish descriptions to Susan herself. Suffice it to say, her jaw-dropping brilliant and painstakingly-worded descriptions of the ghastly, terrifying experiences she endured at the hands of people who were hellbent on the systematic destruction and total annihilation of Susanâs psyche, emotional well-being, and indeed every other possible aspect of her existence. All of this the result of an innocent, innocuous request to learn more about her own fatherâs family; a healthy curiosity to try and make some sense of her fatherâs baffling choices and behavior, not only during Susanâs childhood, but also to sort out the entirely awkward and bizarre meetings with him as she attempted to cultivate a relationship with him as an adult. As for the writing itself, Susan is a very gifted writer; she immediately drew me into the book and didnât let go. I devoured the book in two sittings. This mind-bending story reads like a horror novel, but the fact that itâs a true story adds a component of terror that most novels are unable to capture. So hereâs the bottom line: I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Get it, read it, immerse yourself in it, but be prepared: this book will continue to haunt you long after you finish the last page.
Gaslighting
is real, who could guess it would take the from it did. That said, Susan, you must be a very trusting individual, and while hindsight is 20/20 vision, why did I know from the outset who the culprit was? It was so obvious, yet others hinted the truth, which means you’re also very loyal. None of which makes any of this your fault, far from it, my point is, I was rooting for you thinking, he’s right there! Horrible situation to be in, great story, hopefully the telling of which will help you heal. Lorie
Engaging story but drags
I thought this book was pretty awful until about halfway through. I couldnât figure out why she continued to engage with these âpeopleâ and spent so much time and energy trying to figure âthemâ out. Just when I was about to throw the towel in, the story gets interesting. The reveal unfolds slowly but, when you get it, you want to keep reading to see where it goes. Crazy.
A Terrifying True Story of Criminal Conduct and Internet Stalking….
You Have A Very Soft Voice, Susanâ written by Susan Fensten with Brian Whitney, is an incredible terrifying true story of internet stalking that culminated in threats of kidnapping, violence, torture and death. Fensten,, an artist and book publicist, has studied Film and Art at Hunter College and lives in New York. This is her first book.In 2003, the internet was a new innovative as people were learning the latest ways to communicate. Susan was thrilled to find her cousinâs on Genology.com. With a family history of mental illness, Susan had tragically lost her sister and father, and was eager to learn more about her fatherâs family history. Susanâs joy and excitement after finding her cousins was short lived– her widowed cousin Sharon Barnes immediately falsely and viciously accused Susan of contacting the family for financial gain insisting she was merely an opportunist and grifter. Susan was horrified when her cousin Len, seemed to be obsessed with her and began emailing pornographic images, sexually explicit messages and graphic photos of himself dressed as a woman. When her inbox was flooded with messages from Len and his kinky friends, Susan enlisted the help of her computer savvy friend who was knowledgeable of the newest technology to combat internet problems. When the situation worsened, Susan became severely anxious, depressed and worried constantly for her safety. There seemed to be no end to the strange and dark threatening messages– many were linked to deranged cult members. This is also a story of Susanâs courage to report her ordeal to the NYPD and refusing to stop her fight for justice when she turned to the FBI and bravely battled the unseen forces that had become her frightening new reality. ~ With thanks to the WildBlue Press via NetGalley for the DDC for the purpose of review.
Friends Close and Enemies Closer
In this day and age it is still hard to believe the level of manipulation someone can do from behind a computer. Although, I figured out pretty early on who was harassing her, I was still really engaged and by the end was demanding justice right along with her. These kind of crimes are hard to prosecute and the police likely will not take the time needed to investigate because there are more pressing cases. There were a few typos in the kindle edition but it wasnât distracting to the point of making it unreadable. Just something to look out for if your a stickler for that.Enjoyed the book and will definitely recommend if youâre into true crime.
True story and so frightening
The book is well written–easy to read. I have only read about 1/2 because it reminded me of how careful we have to be about letting people into our lives. I have worked on my family tree and have thought about this story many times when looking at my unknown relatives information who have matching DNA. Things can go very wrong, even when you try to do the right thing. I WILL finish reading it, but had to step away for a bit–it was so real, to me.
Thought Provoking
Most of us have no real knowledge or understanding about computers beyond what’s necessary to get us to out emails or social media. This shows exactly what can happen when someone who does possess that knowledge decide to enter our life in a very frightening way.
Really liked this one. I had read Leslie Rule A Tangled Web and was looking for a twisty really life read and this ticked all the boxes for a messed up and gripping internet stalking read
I had a hard time putting this book down.
This is a breathtaking and nerve-jangling tale – not for the faint-of-heart. Starting with the authorâs hardscrabble childhood in New York City, it moves on with juggernaut power to become an engrossing and terrifying story of cyber-stalking of quite astonishing complexity. I was glued to, and moved by, the book from start to finish; unhesitatingly recommended.
A badly written book, hard to follow.
